Explorer Has No Menu, or No Menu in Vista Folders...

Unlike XP, you can’t right click your menu bar to remove functions, such as the Menu, Address Bar, or Standard Buttons. Your only option in Vista is to go to your control panel, choose “Folder Options”, click the view tab. Once there you should check two things. The first is “Always Show Menus”. The second “Display the full path in the title bar (Classic Folders Only)”

This will give you back the classic menus that have become so familiar to XP users. If you have any questions pertaining to this post, or anything else Vista related, let us know.

Virus Infection “Unable to change desktop background image”

We recently repaired a heavily infected computer. After clean-up we were unable to change the desktop background image. Even after clean-up the names of the background images were all grayed out. After a bit of research we came across several registry keys which were added by a virus.

The first thing we did was to, uncheck “lock web content” in “display properties”.

Then we deleted the following registry keys....

Click “Start” hit run (can’t see run?), type ” Regedit ” (without the quotes) and navigate to the following entries, and delete them.

Error Message: “Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator”

Viruses are always trying to cover their tracks. This repair was no exception.... Error Message: “Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator”. There was no way anyone using this computer would even be capable of securing “Task Manager”. After a bit of research I came across two things, the first was that “Spybot” picked up this problem. The second was that, “Spybot” could only half-repair the problem. After a restart I found that either typing

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

into the “run command”

Or go to “Run” and type “Regedit” and navigate to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies\ System

and delete “DisableTaskMgr”

cleared the problem right up.

Once again, if you have any problems, please Contact Us.

I Can’t See The Run Command

If you can’t see the run command under the start option try....

Right clicking” the “Task Bar”, choose “Properties”, click the “Start Menu” tab, click the “Customize” button, click the “Advanced Tab”, then scroll down to “Run command” and check the box. If its checked, un-check it, apply, and re-check it. If this doesn’t help, tell me, and I’ll help you resolve the issue. Thanks for helping the knowledge base :)

Vista Black Screen, aka. Black Screen Of Death

Recently I replied to a post for help on TechNet.com, about the “BSOD” aka “Black Screen of Death”. I had come across a few computers in this condition. My initial thought was Virus Infection, or a “LNBTW” aka. “Lose nut Behind The Wheel”. But after a good deal of research, I came to the realization that it was a significant update, or hardware change causing these issues. It appears that Microsofts New Anti-Piracy technology is interfering with basic computer updates. Significant updates to RAM, Hard Drives, or power supplies, are causing issues with the new Microsoft Vista OS. (more...)

The Gurus Have Been Busy.....

Have a look at our most recent build. Honest Abe Restoration. I’ve also been working out a few bugs in the system, after a recent install of Vista as my main operating system. We’ve even been able to help a few people out. We are currently building an extensive Microsoft Windows Vista knowledge base, which we’ll be posting sometime in the near future.

Today We Finished FastTracAutomotive.com…..

We’re always interested in a good barter, and ours friends over at FastTracAutomotive had something good to offer. One of the Gurus needs automotive work done, and the guys at FastTracAutomotive were willing to do the labor in kind for advertisements, and a simple webpage. We’ve put together a simple advertisement that they can now use on Craigslist, as well as a simple page that will get them exposure on the internet. (more...)

Today We’re Starting A Site For Tony Barriere Interpreting....

Tony Barriere is the owner and operator of Tony Barriere Interpreting Service INC. based in Burbank CA. They provide Interpretation and Translation services for civil cases, personal injury, as well as social security and immigration. We’ll most likely be building a simple but elegant CSS based website. At this point the sites bare bones, but there’s more to come. TBInterpreting.com Check back soon for updates.

The TredShed’s Got Wireless…….

We were asked recently by the owner of TredShed, Craig, to reconfigure their network. They also wanted to add wireless capability, and update all their computers. The first thing we do when setting up a new network is to evaluate the existing hardware. After an evaluation we found that their main router was causing intermittent problems. Another issue was that their last IT guy had limited networking experience and assigned their machines a seemingly random array of IP addresses, with a totally unnecessary, and confusing static IP address setup. Because of this setup they were unable to add or move machines to their liking.

Windows Vista Ultimate Edition, Short Review

We just recently obtained a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate Edition, the “best of the best”. I wasn’t really sure what to expect with this, the newest version of Windows. I wasn’t even going to chance loading this software onto my everyday machine. So I loaded it onto my IBM ThinkPad T-21, with 512 of RAM. Not exactly a blazing fast machine, but its always proved itself surprisingly robust.

How I Made Our Background Image....

The image you see in the background is actually 8 images all pieced together to make my virtual desktop. I was having an inspirational day and decided I would take pictures of everything on my desk. I then took those images, with the help of Photoshop CS2, and combined them into the image you now see. It’s amazing what you can do when you’re inspired.
