MySQL Server on Windows Vista x64 Setup Guide, An Install That Works!!!

logo-mysql
After hours of beating our heads against a wall, we’ve finally come up with a solid MySQL install guide. It wasn’t easy, but it’s something we needed, and obviously something our fellow developers needed. We spent hours reading through endless threads with errors such as;

Cannot Create Windows Service for MySQL. Error:0,
Vista x64 could not start the service mysql,
Windows could not start the mysql service on local computer error 1067,
Can’t create/write to file,
Can’t connect to [local] MySQL server,
Table ‘tbl_name’ doesn’t exist,

Yet even after reading through what seemed like hundreds of cries for help, and just as many supposed fixes, we were still no closer to resolving this issue. So after coming to the realization that there was little help to be had online, we just attacked our install, and dealt with the issues one by one. After repeated failed installs, and botched setups, we were able to get MySQL loaded properly. The setup instructions you see below were repeatable on 4 different machines, when followed properly. If you run into an issue, please let us know. Good luck with your setup.

I Don’t Have Outlook, Is There a Similar Product I can Download?

The short answer is, Yes.

Listed below you’ll find a variety of free Email clients available for download. But be aware, not all mail providers allow you to use a mail client such as Outlook. Both Yahoo and Hotmail require their users to upgrade to a paid service in order to access their Email via a mail client. However, if you’re ISP provideds you with an Email account, ie. pacbell.net, sbcglobal.net, att.com, comcast.net, etc., You’ll more than likely be able to access your Email using a mail client.

Vista Won’t Remember My Folder Views

*** Update ***
This fix is no longer valid. After a month of smooth sailing, we’re back to the same problem. To our knowledge, there is currently no fix that lasts longer than a month. This fix will last at least that long, but you’ll be back to the same problem a month later. If you’ve tried something that seems to show promise, please let us know with a comment. Thanks for reading.

Vista has made huge strides in becoming a better OS. If you’ve read anything we’ve written to date about Vista, it’s all bad. But since the release of Service Pack 1 and 2, Vista has really come into its own. Rarely do you see the dreaded Blue Screen of Death. This due to Vista’s ability to selectively shut down and restart services before causing critical errors. The user interface is beautiful and somewhat familiar to XP users. The ability of Vista to repair itself has made leaps and bounds. But there is still one thing that is an absolute annoyance and frustration, and that is Vista’s ability to remember folder views.

Help and Support” is missing after you upgrade to Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2

After you upgrade a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer to Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2), Help and Support is missing when you click Start. Additionally, the Help menu is missing in programs that are running on the Windows Server 2003 SP2-based computer.

Additionally, when you type msinfo32.exe or Helpctr.exe at a command prompt to try to start Help and Support manually, you receive the following error message:
Windows cannot open Help and Support because a system service is not running. To fix this problem, start the service named ‘Help and Support’.
However, when you start the Services Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in, the Help and Support service is not listed.

Windows Vista Ultimate Edition, Short Review

We just recently obtained a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate Edition, the “best of the best”. I wasn’t really sure what to expect with this, the newest version of Windows. I wasn’t even going to chance loading this software onto my everyday machine. So I loaded it onto my IBM ThinkPad T-21, with 512 of RAM. Not exactly a blazing fast machine, but its always proved itself surprisingly robust.
